			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To this day elbow strikes are still one of my favorite exercises from my group fitness teaching days. They burn massive calories, work your entire body and dare I say&#8230; make you feel powerful. When performing these make sure to lead the movement through your hip and that your striking elbow side foot pivots [this means it will NOT remain flat on the floor and your knee should end up pointing the same direction as your movement].</p>
<p>To make this exercise more challenging you can do the following.</p>
<ul>
<li>Increase the speed of the movement</li>
<li>Add a squat every time you come back to the home [starting position]</li>
</ul>

<p>PILOXING is the brainchild of Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer <a href="http://piloxing.com/about/viveca_jensen.php">Viveca Jensen</a> it mixes Pilates and boxing into one fast paced, heart pumping workout.</p>
<p>Guess I had been living in a bubble cause until I saw that local health club added this class to their schedule I had never heard of it.  I&#8217;m always looking for a new obsession so I did a little investigating &#8212;  I went on YouTube to check it out (see video below). As I watched the video I became intrigued, it looked like something my group fitness A.D.D mind would love! So I slipped on my Vibrams and I went to check it out myself..</p>
<p>The first thing I noticed was that everyone in class were without shoes. Boy, was I glad I went with my <a href="http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/">Vibram Five Fingers</a> on! I&#8217;m not a germ-a-phoebe but the thought of my barefeet slipping in someone else&#8217;s sweat&#8230; we&#8217;ll let&#8217;s just say, it made my stomach turn. As promised the class was faced paced and had just the right mixture of boxing and Pilates. Let me tell you, there is nothing better to relieve stress than throwing a hard, quick punch. Not to mention the feeling of empowerment that comes from it. It was a nice little mid-morning testosterone boost. <img src='http://i1.wp.com/www.amycotta.tv/wordpress/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif?w=610' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' data-recalc-dims="1" /> </p>
<p>The Pilates movements were reminiscent of the half a semester of Ballet I took in college. They were pretty, simple looking, yet challenging. Not that I made them look elegant or pretty, but I tried.  To my surprise the flow between the hard nose boxing into the slower Pilates moments were seamless (or at least they were for the instructor). The boxing segments kept to the basics which is great for anyone new to the technique. &#8220;What about calorie burn?&#8221; you ask&#8230;. I didn&#8217;t have a heart rate monitor on, but on the Borg <a href="http://www.brianmac.co.uk/borgscale.htm">Rate of Perceived Exertion</a> 10 Scale, I hovered between a 7 &amp; 8 for most of the class. I was deffinently sweating.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to keep in mind that group fitness classes will vary from location and instructor so I&#8217;m basing my review on what I personally experienced. You&#8217;re experience could be completely different from of that of my own.</p>

<li>Being barefoot&#8230; although I love and completely support a minimalist shoe life &#8212; I adore my Five Fingers. I think if you are new to exercising barefoot you need to be careful and ease your way into going shoeless. Also I heard a couple of ladies mention slipping on the floor. So go get some Vibram Five Fingers &#8212; you get all the benefit of being barefoot without the nasty side of it. Besides, they are perfect for this class format.</li>
<li>Since I do have an extensive boxing background I would have loved to see some harder combos.</li>
<li>If you are prone to over use injuries in your hip-flexors watch all the front straight leg lifts.</li>
